Galungan And Kuningan Days: The Won Of Dharma Over Adharma 2006-04-11 [Balibagus.com]
The two most popular Balinese Hindu religious days are Galungan and Kuningan. Galungan, which fall on May 3, is a celebration for victory of Dharma or goodness over Adharma or evils. Balinese Hindus prepare offerings to express their thankfulness to God for the creation of the world and for all things that have been granted. To mark this festival, many barong dances are performed on the streets, and fantastically decorated bamboo poles called penjor are set up—creating a living canopy throughout the island. Balinese Hindus hold traditional ceremonies in their housing compounds and family shrines where small offerings and incenses can be found throughout. Everyone will adorn beautiful traditional clothes prepared specially for this day.
| Kuningan, which fall May 13, is celebrated to honour the divined souls of ancestors. This holy day marks the departure of the ancestral souls which have been visiting Balinese Hindu family on the island. People make mounds of offerings in each house compound. This includes the shield-like ‘tamiang’, yellow rice, and side dishes meant to protect all family members. Some people prefer bathing at holy spring temple Tirta Empul at Tampaksiring for a ritual purification.
