Christmas And New Year On Bali 2006-12-12 [Balibagus.com]
Bali, an island of diverse cultural ceremonies, has its own way to celebrate Christmas and New Year. The Balinese Christians celebrate their own Christmas version. They also incorporated some elements of Balinese culture; for example, decorating the church with various coconut-leaves decoration called tamiang or, even, the very symbol of Balinese Hindus penjor. But wait, they also dress like ordinary Balinese Hindus that go to temple.
| The ornament and decoration found on most of Balinese Hindus’ temple also influence the design of church and in fact you can see it on many churches on Denpasar and Jembrana. Whatever the design and decoration of the church is, it certainly do not affect the way the Balinese Christians pray the Lord.
| Just about one week after the Christmas is the New Year celebration. Although Bali has its own new year celebration called Nyepi, the usual New Year that is based on Gregorian calendar system is also celebrated. Many people spend their New Year’s eve by having a small party with their relatives; some prefer having a barbecue-like party while others just stay at home. Whatever, activities you might do while on Bali just enjoy it!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
