Tumpek Uye 2008-11-06 [Balibagus.com]
Balinese Hindus have a unique way to express their gratitude to God and nature. According to the sacred Yajurved, humans must honor all creatures and must make all of them happy. One way to express their gratitude to God is by honoring of all of His creatures, such as animals and plants. The connection between humans, God, and nature is called Tri Hita Karana. Thus preserving and honoring nature have become an integrated part of Hindu Balinese.
| Tumpek Uye or Tumpek Kandang falls every six months according to Pawukon calendar. This celebration is equivalent to 210 days or seven months in Gregorian calendar. In 2008, Tumpek Uye falls on April 12, 2008 and November 8, 2008. Basically, Tumpek Uye is a celebration to honor Lord Siva or Pasupati—manifestation of God who guard the animals.
| On this day, Balinese Hindus usually make offerings to various animals, such as pigs, cows, chickens, bulls, ducks, and so on. This sacrificial ceremony is a part of Yajna called Butha Yajna. The main purpose of Bhuta Yajna is to raise the souls of the animals.
