Tumpek Wayang To Be Celebrated In Bali 2004-04-29 [Balibagus.com]
Hindu followers throughout Bali celebrate the anniversary of arts, locally known as Tumpek wayang, on May 8, 2004. Although Wayang literally means leather puppet . But, Tumpek Wayang is not merely an anniversary of leather puppet but an anniversary of arts as a whole. The puppets are taken from their boxes and placed in the position as if an actual performance were being given, and then blessed by the owner, who is known as a Dalang.
| The followers will congregate around temples and family shrines in different parts of Bali to hold a ceremony to honor the day. In Badung area, for example, lots of female Hindus will bring gebongan or high fruit structure offerings to their temple. The gebongan is nearly one meter in height and will weigh several kilos. However, people in Banjar Lantang Bejuh, Sesetan, usually bring higher gebongan, between 1 and 1.5 m in height, making them really stand out. Meanwhile, people in Banjar Tengah Sesetan and some other temples will perform some sacred dances such as Barong and Legong.
| According to the Balinese calender, Tumpek Wayang is a day devoted to Sanghyang Iswara, Lord of Puppeteers where Hindu followers perform a ceremony that has something to do with arts and
specially for owners of leather puppets. The ceremony is aimed to make arts remain everlasting in Bali and elsewhere in the universe.
Balinese Hindus also believe that it is unlucky if a baby is born on this date, and when such an event takes place a special ceremony has to be performed in order to purify the child and protect it from harm. (Bbagus.com)
