Bali Cremation | Ubud Royal Cremation Ceremony 2004-07-15 [Balibagus.com]
Tjokorda Istri Niyang Muter or Tjok Muter, wife of the late Tjokorda Gde Ngurah of Puri (palace) Saren Kauh Ubud, died on Tuesday morning 6th May 2004. Tjok Muter was born on 21st January 1910. She was the twin sister of Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati who was the head of the Puri Saren.
Tjok Muter's father, Tjokorda Gde Sukawati, was the King of Ubud, therefore the palebon (royal cremation ceremony) should be bigger than the usual cremation ceremony called ngaben.
| The following are schedule of the palebon and purification ceremonies (courtesy of Cathy Sudharsana):
- 9th July 2004, 10 a.m.: Formal ceremony for the community of Ubud and surrounds to begin working on preparations
- 16th July 2004, 4 p.m.: Ritual washing of the body of Tjok Muter
- 20th July 2004, 3 p.m.: Procession to Peliatan (approximately 2 km) to collect the naga banda (dragon) to bring back to Puri Ubud
- 24th July 2004, 12 p.m.: Royal cremation departing from Puri Ubud to the cremation grounds for the Puri, approximately 1 km to the east. - this is followed by the towers and lembu (bulls) for the mass cremation departing from the centre of town to the cremation grounds for the four banjar of Ubud, approximately 1 km to the west.
- 24th July 2004, late afternoon: The ashes of Tjok Muter are taken to the coast at Ketewel to be dispersed in the sea
- 5th August 2004, morning: Tooth filing ceremony at Puri Saren, Ubud for a number of the youth of Puri Ubud (approximately 10 at this stage)
- 5th August 2004, afternoon: Purification ceremony at Puri Kantor, Ubud for the souls of Tjok Muter and five other members of the family of Puri Ubud so that their souls may find a place within their respective family temples. This also includes other members of the community of Ubud that have been cremated over the past four years (maybe about 100)
- 6th August 2004, morning: Convoy of vehicles from Puri Ubud to the coast at
Ketewel for continuation of the purification ceremony
- 8th August 2004, from morning: Convoy from Puri Ubud to Goa Lawah and Besakih for the final part of the purification ceremony
| The cremation ceremony involves five banjars(local council) and various families of Puri Ubud. There will be many traditional entertainments like wayang (puppet), topeng (mask) performance and Balinese dances starting from 16th July until the cremation ceremony.
People who wish to join in with the cremation should wear sarong with a selendang (sash) tied at their waist and an udeng (turban) tied at their head. [*Cathy Sudharsana and BaliBagus Team]
