Bali Barong Festival 2005 2005-02-03 [Balibagus.com]
Introduction
Barong dance, one of Bali's famous dances, came into existence hundreds of years ago. Barong symbolizes the battle of the two elements in Rwa Bhinneda (two opposite things that complement each other that exist in our live, for example, black vs white, positive vs negative, good vs bad, ying vs yang, and so forth). The barong dance teaches the Balinese that dharma (the good) is always win the battle against the adharma (the evil). Moreover, barong is an effective way to teach Balinese about morality and ethical norms.
Barong dance can be divided into two categories: barong dance for sacred ceremony and barong dance for public performance. Barong dance for sacred ceremony usually takes place in the temple and allowed only on a holy day. Contrary to barong dance for sacred ceremony, the barong dance for public performance usually takes place on common places such as art gallery, museum, hotel, public stage, and so forth.
| On Bali, each of the regencies and municipality has its own barong dance style and characteristics. This diversity also influenced the tabuh and gamelan that follow the barong dance.
The Festival
Nyoman Gunarsa, one of Bali's maestros, is the person behind the festival that will take place on 6-10 February at Nyoman Gunarsa Museum. The vision of the festival is to preserve, enrich, and motivate the development of the barong dance. It also has a mission to strengthen the relation among the barong artists round Bali and to raise the competition among the regencies.
| Each sekehe (participant) will perform three stages to complete the competition: tabuh petegak, barong ngelembar and barong melampahan. Tabuh petegak, one of tabuh that distinguish barong from other kind of dances, must be played with kendang tunggal pepanggulan. Tabuh petegak will take 5-7 minutes. Meanwhile, barong ngelembar that take 17-20 minutes will be played by two juru-bapangs (teenager and adult) without any age restriction. Of all these stages, barong melampahan that contain the tells story of barong dance and theme will take 30-33 minutes.
| Gamelan that follows the barong can be one of the following: bebarongan, semar pagulingan sasih lima/pitu, semaradana, and gong kebyar. Other instruments used must follow the standar bebarongan.
