The 27th Annual Bali Arts Festival

 The 27th annual Bali Arts Festival will take place on 18th June - 16th July 2005 at the Arts Centre, Denpasar. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will open the festival at the Bajra Sandhi Monument at Renon, Denpasar.
The theme for the festival this year is "Sangkala" which means appreciating time. The festival will emphasis on five major activities: carnival, performance, game, parade, and seminar and exhibition.
|  The chief of the Department of Culture of the Province of Bali, Mr Nyoman Nikayana, says that to distribute appreciation some events of the festival will be executed in selected regencies on Bali. This distribution aims at gathering, preserving, and developing the arts and culture at each regency. The peak of this "regency art festival" will then be performed at the main Bali Arts Festival 2005.
Nikayana says that until Monday, 18th April 2005, five groups of arts from foreign countries have signed up for join in the festival. They are Gamelan Galatika (USA), Apsara Asia (Singapore), Naha Bunka Kyokai (Japan), Shakespeare Pempest (USA), Sekar Sakura Nagoya (Japan), and Wira Kencana Ibu-ibu Jepang at Jakarta.
| On the opening ceremony a group of traditional comedians will entertain the visitors at the north side of the Bajra Sandhi monument (opposite of the Governor office). Each regency will perform its best artists. Ogoh-ogoh (giant dolls) that inspired its character from wayang (puppet shadow) will parade through the street. For the first time int the history of Bali Arts Festival, a group of artists from ISI Yogyakarta will perform the Ramayana epic on 26th June night.
| About 10 thousand artists will take part in the 30-day festival. The schedule for the festival is arranged as follows: the first 9 days will take place in the Art Centre (Denpasar), the next 12 days will take places on selected regencies, and the last 9 days will take place back in the Art Centre (Denpasar).
