Specific Balinese cakes known as Jaja Begina are unique in that they ultimately serve two purposes. Most importantly these cakes are traditionally used as offerings to appease the Gods in ceremonies and other religious occasions. But after the ceremony has been completed the colourful cakes are then eaten and enjoyed as a delicious treat to accompany a glass of aromatic Balinese mountainous coffee or sweet tea.
Jaja begina come in different shapes, sizes, textures and colours made from varying combinations of ingredients such as rice flour, sticky rice, palm sugar, fresh fruit and grated coconut. Most people buy their traditional cakes from the local markets from experts who have established small home industries specializing in one or more certain type of cake. Balinese cakes are an essential part of the islands religious and cultural heritage where they not only please the Gods, but also those who consume them!
