Assistance to Orphanages:
Objective:
To improve the social welfare of disadvantaged children, mothers,
and families by providing assistance to orphanages which are in
the greatest need of aid. The location of this project is in the
remote areas around Bali.
Program description:
Provide basic funding for food, medicine, clothing, bedding, furniture
and building repairs to orphanages identified as the most in need
of assistance in order to enable them to provide a rudimentary
social welfare services to the children in their care.
Rational:
Children from one - parent households and from very poor families
are also placed into orphanages. A caring member of the local
community with good intentions of helping these disadvantaged
children often opens these homes. Often the food, shelter, medical
attention, etc. is grossly inadequate, and any government or social
body imposes no supervision. Because of the economic situation
in Indonesia over the past years, many of these orphanages are
now in a much worse situation that before due to the dramatic
increase in the number of children placed in them.
Evaluation:
In 1999 one orphanage was identified in a remote
locations in the mountains of North Bali. The children living
in the orphanage are under the age of twelve with most being under
the age of six. The children were sleeping on grass mats directly
on the dirt floor. The children slept, ate and attended school
in two small rooms (10 feet by 20 feet total living area) made
with mud walls, dirt floor and a corrugated roof. One man cares
for all of the children with a women coming in to cook. With donations
provided by us, they have built a new kitchen, separate boys and
girls dormitories and a canteen.
The foundation has also provided food, clothing,
and blankets and toys. The foundations representative's periodic
visits do continue to monitor the situation. Several other orphanages
in desperate need have also been identified and are provided with
food and clothing.
In 2001 another orphanages in desperate need
have also been identified and are provided with food and clothing.
In 2001 another orphanage with 23 young children, in North Bali
was identified as having urgent needs. It had a leaking roof over
the girls sleeping area, dirt floors, no electricity, very poor
bedding, no water supply and critically low food supplies. The
foundation funded a new roof for the girls dormitory. A water
pump was donated and the piping to supply water to the orphanage.
Additionally 200 kilos of rice, 4 liters of cooking oil and other
food items were supplied. New bedding materials were also given.
The orphanage continues to be monitored by the foundation.
